Lesson Overview

Have you ever felt like someone else's life looks perfect compared to yours? In this lesson, students will discuss the harmful act of comparing oneself to others and strategies to overcome this. This lesson features a video about the negative impacts that result from constantly measuring ourselves against others, especially in regard to social media. Students will learn and practice new vocabulary and idioms relating to the topic with real-life examples. The lesson provides engaging interactive exercises and thought-provoking questions specifically designed for adult students at upper-intermediate and advanced proficiency levels.

Lesson Objectives

  • Grammar: Students will practice forming sentences in various tenses and structures to express their thoughts and ideas about comparison. They will use mixed grammar, including past and present simple and perfect tenses, to explore scenarios where comparison affects emotions and behaviors, helping them articulate experiences accurately.

  • Listening: Students will develop their ability to understand spoken English by watching a video about the impacts of comparison. The video emphasizes the importance of gratitude and recognizing curated content on social media. Students will focus on key vocabulary and phrases, such as "infinite game" and "self-esteem," to improve comprehension and relate ideas to their own lives.

  • Speaking: Students will participate in discussions and role-play activities to share their experiences with comparison and explore strategies to overcome it. Using idioms and vocabulary from the lesson, they will articulate their thoughts on how comparison affects self-esteem, practicing fluency and confidence in expressing opinions.

  • Vocabulary: Students will learn and practice key terms and idioms, such as "the grass is always greener," "keeping up with the Joneses," and "in a league of one’s own." These expressions will be contextualized through exercises and discussions to help students use them effectively when discussing personal growth and comparison in real-life scenarios.

  • Cultural Awareness: Students will explore how comparison varies across cultural contexts, especially with the influence of social media. They will discuss societal values, such as individualism and collectivism, and how these values shape perceptions of success and competition, helping them understand different perspectives.

  • Homework: Students will complete reflective tasks to reinforce the lesson's themes. These include analyzing photos to assess the impact of curated content, explaining idioms in relation to real-life experiences, and evaluating strategies like practicing gratitude and setting personal goals. The tasks aim to deepen understanding and encourage practical application of the lesson's concepts.
